Actuarial science is the study of quantifying and managing risk.  There are many different tracks to the study of actuarial science including, but not limited to, Retirement, Property and Casualty, Investments and Health.  The profession requires a mathematical background usually completely through university coursework as well as additionally satisfying the examination requirements of the society you are working towards for a designation.  Continuing education and professionalism is required in order to remain credentialed.  It is an industry that requires business acumen as well as mathematical knowledge to service its stakeholders.

The co-op program at the University of Waterloo allows students to alternate work and study in order to apply what they learn in classes to the job.  This gives students work experience when they ultimately go and interview for full time positions.  The program provides you with the resources to locate employers and apply for positions, but it is up to the students to interview well and have the experience and skills to secure the job.  Obtaining a job is not guaranteed.

The first few actuarial examinations generally focus on mathematics while the later exams require essay writing to prove comprehension of the material.  The exams depend on the industry of focus that the student selects to study.

The full time position and the work involved vary on the industry and the nature of the position.  Insurance companies will offer a different experience versus a consulting firm where the focus is on meeting the needs of their corporate clients.

The industry is wide and varied and any applicant should take the time to study and understand what their interests are and the process they will need to satisfy to meet their goals.  The starting point is always with a math background and beginning the examination process since that will take many years.  As you gain internship experience and meet people in the industry, you will be able to become knowledgeable about the different areas of specialty.

滑鐵盧大學帶薪實習項目讓學生在就讀時，工作及學習穿插進行，以達到學以致用的目的。這樣給學生將來畢業(yè)后找全職工作面試時能提供一定的工作經驗。這個項目也提供了學生將來求職找工作的一些資源。但是這還是要取決于面試的經驗及技巧以確保能找到帶薪實習工作。不能保證找到工作。

精算師考試的前面幾級主要是考數(shù)學，到后來的幾級考試則需要考一些申論題以證明你的理解能力?？荚囈部次磥韺W生準備就讀的專業(yè)方向，全職的工作。

全職工作及職位要看專業(yè)的方向。保險公司和咨詢公司就是根據(jù)客戶的需求提供不同的經驗。

這個專業(yè)是廣泛及多變化的，所有申請人需要花時間了解自己的興趣及整個認證過程，以滿足設定的目標。起點是由數(shù)學背景開始及同時準備認證考試，因為這需要很多年，隨著你的實習經驗及見到更多行業(yè)內的人，你將對它的專方向會有更豐富的知識。
