With art communities booming worldwide, it is hard to take in everything. A lot of art doesn't get seen, so a group of people decided to change this. Seven years ago, they started an art crawl that took people through small galleries located in an industrial part of Oakland, California. Their goal was to draw attention to the arts in the city. Now, more than 20,000 people flock to the streets of Oakland every month to enjoy art, food, and entertainment.

Begun with only a few artists trying to make a living, the Oakland Art Murmur has grown into a popular cultural event. On the first Friday of each month, galleries are especially crowded with art fans and the streets outside take on a festival atmosphere. Street performers, food vendors, and independent artists all add to the excitement. However, don't expect to see just traditional art. One artist creates images with a portable, bicycle-powered sewing machine. Other artists use temporary venues like car dealerships to exhibit their work. If art is what you are into, you will find more variety than you can imagine at the Oakland Art Murmur.
