The problem with early systems for sending messages was that only the government was allowed to send messages. Businesses and other people had to find their own ways for delivering messages to distant places. Later, with the fall of the Roman Empire, organized postal systems almost completely disappeared in Europe for 600 years. In China, however, Kublai Khan had built up his own system for delivering messages. This system worked in the same basic way as the Roman system. The difference was that Kublai Khan kept 300,000 horses along the roads of his delivery lines. It wasn't until the 1500s that a well-organized postal system appeared again in Europe. One family gained the right to deliver mail for the Holy Roman Empire and parts of Spain. This family continued to carry mail, both government and private, throughout Europe for almost 300 years. However, government-controlled postal systems finally took over private postal businesses, and by the 1700s government ownership of most postal systems in Europe was an accepted fact of life. These early government systems remained quite expensive for public use until 1840 when Roland Hill suggested lowering postal rates in order to encourage more people to use the system. Soon after that many other countries took up his idea. 51. The Egyptian pharaohs sent many of their messages by _________. Make the post faster. B. Make the post bigger. C. Make the post cheaper. D. Make the post easier. B)閱讀下列短文,然后回答問題或完成句子。(每題2分) B
Later on as a young woman she had several romances but never married, although she came close to it once. She accepted a young man one evening, but then turned him down the next morning. She devoted her life to her numerous nieces and nephews, and to the writing of six outstandingly witty novels. In her stories attractive heroines always find a husband in the end even though this often seems unlikely because of various misunderstandings and obstacles(障礙) standing in their way. She wrote Pride and Prejudice when she was 21. Emma was one of her last books, and the other four novels written by Jane Austen are entitled: Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Persuasion. Jane Austen did not simply write love stories, though. She was also very amusing at the expense of certain pompous, shallow characters who always come off very badly in her novels. And she describes the life led by people like her at the time so memorably that readers afterwards often feel they have been there themselves. 56. Jane has at least _____________ siblings. 57. Newspapers are published at various intervals, but they usually come out daily or weekly. Of the nearly 60,000 newspapers being published around the world, about 2,600 are published in the United States. More than half—about 1,800—of them are dailies. Some newspapers have a lot of subscribers—people who pay to have each edition delivered to them. For example, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today each have about two million subscribers. But there are many, many more newspapers with only a few thousand subscribers. These include small-town weeklies and special-interest papers, such as those written for people who enjoy the same hobby. Newspapers provide a service to the community by providing information at little cost. But they are businesses, so they need to make money. They can keep the cost to the readers low and still stay in business by selling space to businesses and individuals who want to advertise products or services. In most newspapers, between one-third and two-thirds of the paper is taken up by advertising. 66. How many newspapers are thought to be published worldwide? 67. Each is born with the power to win at life. Each person has a unique way of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting and thinking. Each has his or her own unique potentials(潛能)—skills and limitations. Each can be a significant, thinking, aware, and creative being—a productive person, a winner. (87) The word “winner” and “l(fā)oser” have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who makes someone else lose. To us, a winner is one who responds authentically(真正地) by being believable, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine (誠(chéng)懇的), both as an individual and as a member of a society. (88) Winners do not dedicate their lives to an ideal of what they imagine they should be. Rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence, and manipulating(操縱) others. (89) They are aware that there is a difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable. Winners do not need to hide behind a mask. Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can also delay enjoyment. A Brahmin, a member of the Hindu Priest, had a great reputation for holiness (神圣), and received many presents so that he became rich. One day, he took a fancy to dress himself as a poor peasant. Then he went into the market place but no one saluted (敬禮) him and no one gave him any presents. The Brahmin then returned to his house and, dressing himself in rich garments (外衣), once more set out for the market place. This time, everyone saluted him and made way for him and many handed him presents. This was the usual custom when a holy Brahmin happened to make his appearance in the market place. Once again, the Brahmin returned to his home and changed his clothes. Then, taking the rich garments, he set them up on a shrine near the market. As he prostrates (跪拜) himself before them, cried continually, “O mighty garments, you are esteemed above all else in this world...” The people gathered round in wonder, and in time came to worship the clothes as this Brahmin was doing.
