經(jīng)濟學人在國內(nèi)受到眾多英語學習者的推崇，并不僅僅因為它是考研題源——文章的犀利觀點以及玩弄語言的春秋筆法也是一個重要原因。在讀經(jīng)濟學人的過程中你會時不時發(fā)現(xiàn)那些讓人感到眼前一亮的句子和表達，學會賞析和借鑒這些表達，對我們的語言學習大有裨益。接下來我會寫一個經(jīng)濟學人句子賞析系列，拋磚引玉，希望通過解讀這些精彩的句子，發(fā)現(xiàn)語言之美，提升語言應用的意識。下面是第一期的內(nèi)容：

經(jīng)濟學人在曼德拉逝世后寫了一篇社論報道 Invictus, 文章對曼德拉的評價非?？陀^，值得一讀。閱讀鏈接：

文章中出現(xiàn)了這樣一個句子：

第二段開頭第一句的大意是“但是，當把他的這些缺點——以及南非在他退休之后的沉淪——置于他的全部成就的光芒之下時，它們就顯得黯然失色了”，這是一個寫得很棒的對比句型。句子中的 pale into insignificance 是一個短語，意思是“相比之下微不足道，相形失色”，set against 則表示“與…作對比，把…放在一起考慮”

寫作論證時可以借鑒'...pale into insignificance when set against...'這個句型，比如闡述無人駕駛技術(shù)的好處時可以說：

The shortcomings of self-driving car pale into insignificance when set against the great benefits it will bring to us --a plunge in road accidents and less pollution.

1.He oscillated between happiness and  despair.

2.Her attitude towards me oscillated/fluctuated between friendship and hostility.

3.His mind seesawed between hope and despair all through those weeks.

4.She's been very up and down since her husband went into hospital. 

在經(jīng)濟學人的特別報道 Founder's Blues 中出現(xiàn)了一個表達：

對于創(chuàng)業(yè)公司CEO每天面對的巨大壓力，文中有一個很生動的描述，'on an emotional roller-coaster '，心情像在坐過山車一樣，各種跌宕起伏。roller coaster 除了可以表示過山車外，還可以表示情況的起伏不定，如：

1.Share prices have been on a roller coaster these last few days.

2.Steve Jobs was revered by many not only because of his strategic vision and showmanship ,but because of the roller coaster life he experienced.

'In the morning you feel everything is on the right track and in the evening everything seems in the gutter' , on the right track 是指處在正確的路線上，in the gutter 則是指處于糟糕的狀況中，兩者剛好形成對應，很有對稱感。

怎樣描述一件事情既有優(yōu)點又有缺點呢？ 一般可以用 the pros and cons (advantages and disadvantages) of something

我們也可以試試看像下面這樣寫

文中第一句為我們完美示范了怎樣對事物的優(yōu)缺點進行展開論述。

a mixed blessing (a situation that has both good and bad parts) 在中文里有“喜憂參半”的意思。當在議論文里面要說明一件事既有好處又有壞處的時候，我們可以用上'something is a mixed blessing'，然后進行展開。這個句式結(jié)構(gòu)并不難，難的是如何恰當?shù)孛枋鍪挛锏膬?yōu)缺點，寫作者的背景知識積累就顯得很關(guān)鍵了。

寫作時可以根據(jù)話題所需進行造句：

1.Working in a big city is a mixed blessing.It is so convenient and comfortable there,but noise pollution and traffic congestion are two big headaches.

2.Many scientists said discovering the power of the atom was a mixed blessing as it led to nuclear power, but it also made nuclear weapons possible.

經(jīng)濟學人的 Letters版塊刊登了每周的讀者來信，由于雜志的定位為面向全球高端人群，所以給經(jīng)濟學人寫信的讀者也較為高端，包括大學教授，高層政府官員，國際組織負責人，甚至還有國家元首。很多信件都寫得像GRE作文一樣嚴謹，可讀性也很高。下面是一個例子：

'throw the baby out with the bathwater' 這一說法來自德語中的'das Kind mit dem Bade ausschütten'.

傳說在中世紀的歐洲，全家人很久才洗一次澡，首先是父親洗，然后是母親洗，最后是孩子洗，孩子洗的時候水已經(jīng)很臟了，家人有時候會直接把水倒掉，而忘記了在水中的孩子，所以有 'throw the baby out with the bathwater' 這樣的說法, 即倒洗澡水的同時把孩子也一起倒掉，引申為不分精華糟粕全盤否定（來自英文維基百科）。

在這里指國會為了防止海外稅務(wù)犯罪而犧牲了其他美國人的利益。'throw the baby out with the bathwater' 也是一個萬能句型，比如我們可以說：

The authorities should not throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to launching campaign against pornography on the Internet.

下面的段落出自文章 Ancient and modern mariners ，主要對航運史進行介紹。

這個段落真正的亮點在最后一句話 'Even in the ship’s bowels, the strongest odour is not the fuel oil used to power the engine but the coffee used to power the engineers.' 句子讀起來很帶感，讓人印象深刻：即使是在船底，最濃重的氣味不是來自驅(qū)動引擎的燃油，而是來自驅(qū)動工程師的咖啡。

通過 power the engine 和 power the engineers 的對比，說明咖啡對船上工程師們的重要性，也從側(cè)面說明了他們在海上生活的單調(diào)和孤寂。小說 The Kite Runner 中有一個情節(jié)是主人公最后要帶小男孩從阿富汗回美國，但中間經(jīng)歷了很多思想掙扎，其中的一個句子也有異曲同工之妙
