1. college 主要有兩個意思：一是指高等?？茖W(xué)?；?獨(dú)立的)學(xué)院，二是指綜合性大學(xué)內(nèi)部的學(xué)院。如：

She goes to the Teachers’ College. 她上師范學(xué)院。

There are many colleges at Harvard and Yale. 在哈佛和耶魯大學(xué)有許多學(xué)院。

2. 在日常生活用語中，college 可用來泛指“大學(xué)”，此時其前通常不用冠詞。如：

He is a college student. 他是大學(xué)生。

He’s going to college in the autumn. 他今年秋要上大學(xué)。

We were at [in] college together. 我們大學(xué)是同學(xué)。

◆colour n.

1. 表示“顏色”，注意英語中各種顏色(colour)的表示法：

(1) 英語中表示顏色的常用詞：red(紅)，black(黑)，blue(藍(lán))，white(白)，green(綠)，yellow(黃)，grey [gray](灰)，pink(粉紅)，orange(橙)，purple(紫)，brown(棕色，褐色)等

(2) 表示淺(淡)色，英語通常在顏色詞前加 light 或 pale。如：

light green(淺綠)，pale yellow(淡黃)，pale blue(淺藍(lán))等

(3) 表示深色，英語通常在顏色詞前加 dark 或 deep。如：deep red(深紅)，dark green(深綠)等

(4) 表示帶某種顏色，英語通常是在顏色詞之后加后綴-ish。如：reddish(帶紅色)，yellowish(帶黃色)等。

2. colour 一詞的用法：

(1) 詢問顏色，用疑問詞 what colour, 注意表達(dá)習(xí)慣：

正：What colour is your bike? 你的自行車是什么顏色?

正：What is the colour of your bike? (同上)

誤：What colour has your bike?

(2) 當(dāng)表示顏色的含義比較清楚時，一般不用 colour 一詞：

正：The box is red. 那個盒子是紅色的。

正：The box is red in colour. (去掉 in colour 更自然)

誤：The box is red colour.

(3) 當(dāng)表示顏色的含義不很確定時，通常用 colour 一詞，且常與表示不確定意義的不定冠詞連用。如：

That thing is of a green colour. 那東西呈綠色。

It was a reddish-brown colour. 它是紅棕色的。

3. 注意區(qū)別作定語用的 colour, coloured, colourful：

(1) colour 作定語，表示它所修飾名詞能產(chǎn)生 colour 的效果。如：colour TV(彩電)，colour film(彩色電影)等

(2) coloured 作定語，指它所修飾的名詞具有 colour 的特征。如：coloured flags(彩旗)，coloured chalk(彩色粉筆)等

(3) colourful 作定語，主要指顏色的多樣性或色彩的鮮艷性，意為“豐富多彩的”、“多彩的”、“艷麗的”。如：colourful wings (五顏六色的翅膀)，colourful clouds(彩云)等

4. 顏色詞的“顏”外之意：顏色詞除表示各種顏色外，還可有各種引申意義。如：red 可引申為“生氣”、 “緊張”；blue 可引申為“沮喪”，“無望”、“下流”；black 可引申為“發(fā)怒”、“污臟”；white 可引申為“純潔”、“誠實(shí)”；yellow 可引申為“膽怯”、“妒忌”，等等。如：

He was black with rage. 他怒容滿面。

He is white and can be relied on. 他誠實(shí)可靠。

I’m feeling rather blue today. 今天我情緒低落。

He is too yellow to stand up and fight. 他太膽怯而也敢奮起反抗。

5. 容易譯錯的顏色詞：

(1) black and blue 通常不能直譯為“黑色和藍(lán)色”，而是指“(全身)青一塊紫一塊的”、“遍體鱗傷的”。如：

He was beaten black and blue. 他被打得遍體鱗傷。

(2) black and white 指“黑白相間的”、“白紙黑字”( 即書面形式)。如：

The cows are black and white. 這些奶牛是黑白花色的。

I want this agreement in black and white as soon as possible. 我要這個協(xié)議盡早寫成白紙黑字。
