Woman finds unusual tablets at the bottom of Starbucks drink: 'I was scared to death'

Starbucks is known for having an ever-evolving list of drinks that incorporate seasonal add-ons and trendy ingredients. But concocting something new likely wasn’t the intention of a Utah barista who gave a customer a drink with two cleaning tablets at the bottom.

Deneice Lee of Layton, Utah, was making her routine trip to the Starbucks inside a local Smith’s grocery store when she quickly determined that something about her green tea Frappuccino tasted “off.” It was the second drink the barista had made for her the day after her first order wasn’t made correctly, so Lee let it pass as drinkable — never considering that it could cause her harm.

Two white tablets were exactly what Lee found when she took a video of herself pouring out the remaining liquid in the cup. Lee’s friend then called a Starbucks manager who she knew to inquire about what they might be. That’s when Lee found out that the same tablets are used to clean the espresso machines.“I was scared to death,” Lee said. “Really panicked, I had no idea what I ingested.”

“I honestly think it was an honest mistake,” Lee concluded. “I would hope it’s an honest mistake. I really just don’t ever want it to happen to anyone else.”

Unlikely an accident. That's like someone saying they dropped a roofie into your drink 'by accident' and that they will be 'reviewing proper roofie handling procedures to prevent any incidents like this from happening again.' There is really no 'accidental' way for cleaning tablets or pharmaceutical pills to go into a beverage. She complained and made the employee throw out a drink and re-make it. And the re-do had cleaning tablets in it. Think about it.

good reason to make your coffee at home, if you look online you can find the same basic recipes they use and save yourself a fortune. i make a Chocolate Cappuccino every mourning, just as good as any coffee shop.

Starbucks is way too expensive. For less than 50 cents a drink, I make coffee and specialty coffee drinks that are guilty pleasures. I don't understand all the fuss about Starbucks.

Justin my opinion, but I think Starbucks fits in perfectly with the “l(fā)ook at me and my Starbucks coffee cup that I paid too much for” mentality of some people. Why purchase a $150 Ralph Lauren Purple Label shirt when Wal-Mart sells similar looking shirts for less than $20? It’s all about the image that shallow people hold so tightly to.
