好狗不擋道！

與中文一樣，很多英語習(xí)語也與動(dòng)物有關(guān)，尤其是貓（cat）和狗(dog)

如果沒能掌握這些習(xí)語的含義，就有可能鬧笑話了。例如：

It's raining cats and dogs.

下雨和貓、狗有什么關(guān)系？難道翻譯成“正在下貓、下狗”嗎？當(dāng)然不是，事實(shí)上，這個(gè)習(xí)語的含義是“外面正下著很大的雨”。

下面是幾個(gè)常見的，與cat和dog有關(guān)的英語習(xí)語：

1. let the cat out of the bag：無意中泄秘，說漏嘴

I was trying to keep the party a secret, but Mel went and let the cat out of the bag.

我盡力守住要舉辦聚會(huì)這個(gè)秘密，可是梅爾一去就說漏了嘴。

2.not enough room to swing a cat：空間很狹??；（地方）連轉(zhuǎn)個(gè)身都困難

?You certainly couldn't fit a double bed in here. There isn't enough room to swing a cat!

這兒的雙人床肯定不適合你?？臻g太小了，轉(zhuǎn)個(gè)身都困難。

3. put the cat among the pigeons

當(dāng)某人說了或做了一些造成很大麻煩的事，或使得人生氣的事時(shí)，我們可以說： They put the cat among the pigeons

The announcement certainly put the cat among the pigeons!

這一公告肯定造成了很多麻煩

4. while the cat's away, the mice will play

這句話的含義是：“當(dāng)某個(gè)地方或部門的負(fù)責(zé)人不在時(shí)，人們通常不好好好做事”

Jack has been away this week, so the office hasn't been getting much done. While the cat's away, the mice will play.

杰克這周出差不在，因此辦公室好多事情都沒能完成。真是貓兒不在，老鼠翻天。

5.dog's breakfast 指代做得很糟糕的事情。

Jack had attempted to fill in the form and made a complete dog's breakfast of it.

杰克嘗試完成這個(gè)表格，但結(jié)果做得是一團(tuán)糟。

6.you can't teach an old dog new tricks 很難改變某人多年養(yǎng)成的習(xí)慣

He's been driving that way for so long now. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

他已經(jīng)這樣開車好多年了。你是沒法改變他的開車習(xí)慣的。
