英語中有個著名的句型 the reason why…is…（…的理由是…），但有同學提出，在某些地方看到 the reason that…is…好像也可以。

那么 reason 后面的從句用 that 引導還是 why 引導？侃哥在本文中將為你解密：

先看這個句子，思考一下，空格里應填入 that 還是 why？

The reason ____ she dropped out of school is that she didn’t want to increase the family’s financial burden.

她輟學的原因是因為她不想給家里增加經濟負擔。

答案一會兒公布，先看一下 that 和 why 的原理：

1. the reason that 后接具體原因，that 實際上引導了一個同位語從句，說明了reason 的內容。比如：

The reason that he got stuck in the traffic is so bad.

那個他堵在路上的理由太爛了。

說明：“(that) he got stuck in the traffic”正是這個 reason的內容，他正是用“堵在路上”作為他的理由，不過句子后面說這個理由比較爛。

2. the reason why后接對這個理由的修飾，why實際上引導了一個定語從句。比如：

The reason why he was late is that he got stuck in the traffic.

他遲到的原因是他堵在路上了。

說明：“(why) he was late”并不是這個 reason的內容，而是對 reason 的修飾，翻譯為“他遲到的那個理由”，這個理由的內容是什么呢？就是后面 “is that he got stuck in the traffic”（他堵在路上）。

再回到上面的思考題：

The reason ____ she dropped out of school is that she didn’t want to increase the family’s financial burden.

她輟學的原因是因為她不想給家里增加經濟負擔。

這里“she dropped out of school”并不是這個 reason 的內容對嗎？只是對 reason 的修飾，所以應該用 why 引導，空格中填入 why，你做對了嗎？

最后補充一種情況：

reason 后面跟的定語從句如果缺了主語或賓語，那么是不能用 why 引導的，須用 that（或which）引導：

He gave us a reason that seemed to beworkable.

他給了我們一條看似可行的理由。（定語從句缺主語，要用 that 或 which 引導）

Could you tell me the reason that he gave you yesterday?

能告訴我他昨天給你的那條理由嗎（定語從句卻賓語，要用 that或 which 引導，或者可省略引導詞）。
