Britain and the US Agree to Peace

      When

      Where

      Who

       What

      When: 1782
      Where:  Paris, France

      Who:
Peace delegations from US and UK

      What:
The formal Treaty of Paris ending all hostilities between all belligerents including the US, UK, Kingdom of France, Kingdom of Spain and the Netherlands was still ten months away in 1783, but getting all the participants to agree was difficult.  By this point, the US and Britain had concluded their aims, but no one was willing to accept a separate peace deal.  The next ten months was spent wrangling concessions and agreements from the other participants.

      Why

      significant

While France was ready to agree to terms, they were committed to their ally Spain, who was insistent on British surrender of Gibraltar (still under British control to this day) and the Netherlands had similar goals.  Getting everyone to accept a common peace required some skillful negotiations, consolations and even some bluffing that the US would renounce their treaty with Spain and leave them to fight Britain alone.  Fortunately, all parties conceded to alternative aims and signed the Treaty of Paris 1783 on September 3, 1783.
