不知道大家注意過沒有，英文中有個全能詞，one，它有很多用法，我們今天只講其作為一個名詞性的代詞用法，它可以被用來指代很多東西。

從語法上來講，我們使用one指代某樣東西，通常是在有前文提到該事物的時候。如：

I’d like an ice cream. Are you having one, too?

我想吃個冰淇淋。你也來一個嗎？

Your plan is a good one.

你的計劃很好。

I’m only using this car until I can buy a better one.

在沒能沒到更好的車之前，我就用這部車了。

A: The meeting will begin.

會議就要開始了。

B: It’s gonna be a hard one.

這次會議會很艱難。

I haven’t started at all for the exam.
It’s gonna be a tough one.

我現在還沒開始準備考試呢。一定會很難。

而在口語中，one可以脫離上下文，而指代大家都熟知的某樣東西。最常見的是，用于指“a day”。

It’s gonna be a cold one.

今天會很冷。

According to the weather forecast,
it’s going be a hot one.

天氣預報說，今天會很熱。

It’s only 8 am, and I’ve got
a hundred emails already.
It’s gonna be a long one today.

早上8點鐘我就已經收到100封電郵了！
今天一定會很漫長。

可以用來指笑話、妙語、想法或問題等，比如你可以說：

OK, here’s a good one.

可以了，我有個好笑話/好主意。

Did you hear the one about the American
who goes into a bar in Paris?

你有沒有聽過那個
美國人進了巴黎一家酒吧的笑話?。?/span>

【“the one about”是固定用法，
指“關于……的笑話”。】

A: What do you attribute your success to?

你的成功歸因于什么呢？

B: Oh that's a difficult one.

哦，這個問題不好回答。

還可以指喝的一杯酒：

Do you have time for a quick one before you go?

有沒空走之前去快速喝一杯？

還可以指某一類人，這時一般前面會加上形容詞little/young/smart/lucky等：

She’s got four little ones.

她有四個孩子。

The smart ones always come out on top.

聰明人總是能出人頭地。
