absence表示“缺席；不在；離開(kāi)”，fond表示“喜愛(ài)的；深情的”。該習(xí)語(yǔ)的字面意思是“分開(kāi)了心里的情感會(huì)更濃”，相當(dāng)于漢語(yǔ)里常說(shuō)的“一如不見(jiàn)，如隔三秋”，或“小別勝新婚”。
