Traditional opera star's career reaches new stage

The career of Yuan Yuan, a performer of China's traditional Huangmei Opera, reached a new peak this year. In May, she was presented with the Plum Performance Award, the highest award for traditional Chinese theatrical art.

今年，中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)黃梅戲演員袁媛的事業(yè)達(dá)到了一個(gè)新的高峰。5月，她獲得了中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)戲劇藝術(shù)的最高獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)“梅花表演獎(jiǎng)”。

The piece she performed in the final round of the competition was the fictional story of Lin Yufei, a young communist who sacrificed her life in the 1920s for her communist ideals.

她在最后一輪比賽中表演的是一個(gè)虛構(gòu)的故事，講述了20世紀(jì)20年代為共產(chǎn)主義理想獻(xiàn)出生命的年輕共產(chǎn)黨員林玉飛的故事。

The opera titled The Communist Manifesto was created by the Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre in East China's Anhui province to commemorate the centenary of the Communist Party of China in 2021. A leading performance artist at the theater and a member of the CPC at the same time, Yuan has been exploring the creation of modern-themed Huangmei operas since 2011.

這部名為《共產(chǎn)黨宣言》的歌劇由中國(guó)東部安徽省的安徽黃梅戲劇院創(chuàng)作，以紀(jì)念2021年中國(guó)共產(chǎn)黨成立一百周年。袁媛是劇院的主要表演藝術(shù)家，同時(shí)也是一名中共黨員，自2011年以來(lái)，她一直在探索現(xiàn)代主題黃梅戲的創(chuàng)作。

That year, she participated in the performance of another opera inspired by the heroic deeds of Chinese communist pioneers titled Hong Mei Zan, or Ode to the Red Plum Flower. It was the first time she had played a lead character in an opera.

那一年，她參加了另一部以中國(guó)共產(chǎn)黨先驅(qū)的英雄事跡為靈感的歌劇《紅梅贊歌》的演出。這是她第一次在歌劇中扮演主角。

Yuan recalls that, when preparing for that role, she found herself facing a number of challenges. From the costume she wore to the arrangement of her singing, everything was different from performing traditional operas.

袁媛回憶說(shuō)，在準(zhǔn)備這個(gè)角色時(shí)，她發(fā)現(xiàn)自己面臨著許多挑戰(zhàn)。從她的服裝到演唱的編排，一切都不同于表演傳統(tǒng)戲曲。

"The spirit of the revolutionary pioneers is conveyed using the soft, gentle tune of Huangmei Opera, integrating contemporary aesthetics and traditional opera performance. Every performance can be both a challenge and a breakthrough for us," says Yuan.

袁媛說(shuō)：“革命先鋒隊(duì)的精神是用黃梅戲輕柔的曲調(diào)傳達(dá)的，融合了當(dāng)代美學(xué)和傳統(tǒng)戲曲表演。每一場(chǎng)表演對(duì)我們來(lái)說(shuō)都是挑戰(zhàn)和突破。”

To overcome the difficulties and enhance the opera's presentation, Yuan visited Huangmei Opera composer Shi Bailin for inspiration, so as to better determine how the characters should sing and move. In addition, she also incorporated a Western orchestra and digital screen into the production, adding a modern dimension to the stage presentation.

為了克服困難，增強(qiáng)戲曲的表現(xiàn)力，袁媛拜訪了黃梅戲作曲家時(shí)白林，以尋求靈感，從而更好地確定角色應(yīng)該如何唱歌和走動(dòng)。此外，她還在制作中加入了西方管弦樂(lè)隊(duì)和數(shù)字屏幕，為舞臺(tái)呈現(xiàn)增添了現(xiàn)代感。

When creating The Communist Manifesto, she and her colleagues took another step forward by combining classic revolution-themed music with traditional dancing. Over a period of more than two years, the opera has become immensely popular among theatergoers.

在創(chuàng)作《共產(chǎn)黨宣言》時(shí)，她和同事們又向前邁進(jìn)了一步，將經(jīng)典的革命主題音樂(lè)與傳統(tǒng)舞蹈相結(jié)合。在兩年多的時(shí)間里，這部歌劇在觀眾中大受歡迎。

Huangmei Opera is a national-level form of intangible cultural heritage in China. From Yuan's perspective, the secret of its development in the new era lies in the combination of tradition and innovative ideas.

黃梅戲是中國(guó)國(guó)家級(jí)非物質(zhì)文化遺產(chǎn)。在袁媛看來(lái)，黃梅戲在新時(shí)期發(fā)展的秘訣在于傳統(tǒng)與創(chuàng)新的結(jié)合。

In recent years, Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre has produced a number of modern Huangmei operas inspired by contemporary events, such as the fight against corruption and rural revitalization. Yuan was a delegate to the 20th CPC National Congress in 2022, and subsequently brought the guiding principles of the congress to the stage.

近年來(lái)，安徽省黃梅戲劇院以反腐倡廉、鄉(xiāng)村振興等當(dāng)代事件為靈感，制作了一批現(xiàn)代黃梅戲。袁媛是2022年中國(guó)共產(chǎn)黨第二十次全國(guó)代表大會(huì)的代表，隨后將大會(huì)的指導(dǎo)原則搬上了舞臺(tái)。

"Only when we performers have a strong sense of faith can we create profound works," says Yuan, adding that she wishes to continue promoting and publicizing traditional Chinese culture by portraying more characters who are resilient, amiable and of high moral character.

袁媛說(shuō)：“只有我們演員有強(qiáng)烈的信仰感，我們才能創(chuàng)作出深刻的作品。”她補(bǔ)充道說(shuō)，希望通過(guò)塑造更多堅(jiān)韌頑強(qiáng)、和藹可親、品德高尚的人物，繼續(xù)推廣和宣傳中國(guó)傳統(tǒng)文化。
