I probably slept a bit too long during the day yesterday, so I couldn't fall asleep for ages at night. I finally drifted off just before 11 o'clock. It was already hard to fall asleep, but沒想到 (unexpectedly), at around 4 a.m., that damn big goose started squawking again, making it impossible for me to sleep. I had to get up to check, only to find nothing unusual. Turns out the little ducks had been lured out by the wandering geese. I hated that noisy goose even more—if it wouldn't sleep, no one else could either. No choice but to get up before 5 a.m., when it was still barely light. After waking up, I saw the geese had brought out all the ducklings and goslings. I quickly fed the hens and geese, then rushed to take the little ducks and goslings to the east vegetable plot, letting them peck at the greens. Some little ones were cold and soaking wet, so I hurried to put them in the shed, turned on the heat lamp, and warmed them up. When I got home, Dad said we needed to replace the LPG and that we were out of rice—time to take the paddy to be milled. After boiling water, I made noodles while Dad took the paddy to the mill. After breakfast, Dad hauled the empty gas tank to exchange for LPG. I went back to the peach orchard, moved the ducklings and goslings from under the heat lamp to the vegetable garden, and let them forage freely. Next, I started picking cowpeas. With days of rain, they hadn't been picked in time and had gone tough. After Dad and I finished picking, we grabbed a few watermelons too. Unbelievable—after the rain, some melons had split wide open. After the long drought followed by days of rain, many tomato and watermelon vines in the garden looked half-dead. Luckily, the muskmelon and chili seedlings were holding up. Since this lunar year has two Junes, summer will be extra long—maybe we can plant another batch of watermelons after this one dies off. After picking the cowpeas, we rushed home, boiled them, and laid them out to dry into strips. Maybe because it had just cleared up, or because the drying spot was near the paddy field, it wasn't as scorching as when I dried cowpeas in the old courtyard as a kid. After our lunch nap, Dad and I went to the south soybean field to spray rabbit repellent. The wild rabbits were so bad they'd eaten our seedlings down to just two leaves. After spraying, we checked the plum orchard and found a thick layer of fallen plums on the ground. Deep purple and irresistibly juicy-looking, we grabbed two plastic bags and picked some to take home.
