這首詩的作者是理查德·亨利·斯托達德(1825-1903)，美國評論家，詩人。生于美國馬薩諸塞州，年輕時住紐約城，當過鐵匠。1849年開始靠寫作為生，隨后貢職于多個雜志社，擔任編輯和評論員。他的詩歌作品以寧靜，誠懇，細膩，理想化著名，被人稱為抒情詩人。

There are gains for all our losses. 

There are balms for all our pain;

But when youth, the dream, departs

It takes something from our hearts,

And it never comes again.

我們失去的一切都能得到補償，
