chicken這個詞大家都認識，不過，很多人由于課本的原因，有個誤解，會認為chicken指的就是小雞，公雞是cock，母雞是hen。 在講我們的主題之前，我們先來為chicken“正名”，順便講講chicken家族。chicken的意思就是指“雞”或“雞肉”，在牛津字典中解釋為：a large bird that is often kept for its eggs or meat; meat from achicken?！靶‰u”一般用chick來表示。公雞除了cock，美國人一般常用的單詞是rooster（cock另有他用，想知道的，自己查字典去）。母雞沒錯就是hen。 chicken常用的一個表達就是那個著名的“先有雞還是先有蛋”，引申為一個成語： a chicken-and-egg situation/problem 因果難定的局面/問題 So it’s a chicken-and-egg situation again! 所以，這又是一個因果難明的局面咯！ chicken還有兩個常用的諺語，一個比較常用： Don’t count your chickens beforethey’re hatched. 蛋沒孵化先別數(shù)雞。/不要過早打如意算盤。 另一個聽說或會用的人可能不多： (Sb.’s) Chickens come home toroost. （某人）自食惡果。/報應(yīng)到自己身上。 A: Ada found out that I said she was incompetent, and nowshe won't recommend me for that job. B: The chickens have come home to roost, you know. A：艾達發(fā)現(xiàn)了我說她不稱職，現(xiàn)在她不會推薦我做那項工作了。 B：你要知道，自食其果啊。 除了這兩個本來的意思，chicken還可以表達“膽小鬼；懦夫”的意思： 不要這么膽??！ 講完chicken的名詞用法，現(xiàn)在我們要來講它很常用的另兩種詞性的用法，都是由前面所說的第三種用法來的。一種是形容詞： chicken 膽小的；怯懦的 He’s too chicken to talk to her! 他膽小得不敢跟她講話！ I was terrified, but I didn't want the others to think Iwas chicken. 我害怕了，但我不想其他人覺得我膽小。 另外就是動詞的用法，常以短語動詞的形式出現(xiàn)： chicken out 因害怕而放棄；臨陣退縮 You're not chickening out, are you? 你不是準(zhǔn)備臨陣退縮吧？ I was going to tell her the truth, but I chickened out. 我準(zhǔn)備要告訴她真相的，但我害怕了沒敢說。 If you chicken out now, you’ll never get another chanceagain. 如果你現(xiàn)在臨陣退縮了，以后就不會再有機會啦！ 好吧，說了這么久chicken，考慮一下晚上要不要吃chicken呢？ 額外奉送： fried chicken 炸雞 roast chicken 烤雞 chicken soup 雞湯 chicken and chips 炸雞薯條 chicken-fried steak 炸雞排 chicken leg/chicken drumstick 雞小腿 chicken thigh 雞大腿 chicken breast 雞胸 Which is your favorite?
